Like many houses in the area, this single family home in Reston is in a great location and has a beautiful setting with lots of green space in a family-friendly cul-de-sac that is perfect for young kids. When it came to the interior of their home, however, our clients had been thinking of an extensive update to their Kitchen, Breakfast Nook and Family Room for some time. Their design tastes lean modern/transitional and we knew it was important to incorporate a design that fitted with the rest of their home.Â
We started by creating a more open feeling by removing the lowered ceiling in the Kitchen and changing the U-shaped cabinetry layout. A family-sized island now extends into the previous Breakfast Nook. The existing visually-heavy wood cabinets added to the sense of constrained space, so we started fresh with white perimeter cabinets and lighter wood-tone cabinets on the island – which not only looks fab, but also warms up the space. The black linear handles add a modern touch and keep the lines clean. The existing large mullioned window was not doing justice to the view to the yard (and was restricting light) so we replaced it with a large picture window. Light now flows into the Kitchen and the clear view brings the outside in.
